2024-2025 Occupancy Rules
- Purpose. The following rules are to assure personal safety to the occupants of the CHAPTER HOUSE, to provide protection to the structure, and to avoid expense resulting from poorly planned changes.
- Fasteners. STUDENT’S personal property may not be fastened to any room surface except with fasteners approved by the ALUMNI CORP. The only approves fasteners are sticky putty for hanging posters (white only) and gravity. Prohibited fasteners are adhesive tape, duct tape, nails, pins, tacks, screws or any other object stuck into the drywall or woodwork. If this prohibition imposes a hardship to the tenant’s quiet enjoyment of the space, the tenant has an obligation to notify the House Director, in writing, the nature of such hardship and circumstances. The ALUMNI CORP will attempt to resolve such hardships with the use of approved devices and modifications. Where materials must be purchased or outside contractors employed, the tenant may be asked to pay for the cost of the modifications.
- Furniture and Cabinetry. In general, all items moved into the room must not exceed a size that can be carried by two people from outside the CHAPTER HOUSE and freely pass through doors, halls and stairs without obstruction. The objects must not be modified in any manner that would prevent subsequent removal. All assembly or construction must take place outside the CHAPTER HOUSE. Objects constructed for the room must receive prior approval before being moved into the room.
- Electrical Appliances. Only approved appliances may be plugged into electrical outlets. The following are approved electrical devices:
- Stereo rack systems with amplifiers of not more than 100 watts per side.
- Television (not more than one each per room).
- Personal computers.
- Computer printers.
- Floor and desk lamps.
- Personal size refrigerators – occupants are responsible for damages from defrosting g. Power strips (not more than one strip per occupant).
- Electrical devices per room are further limited to an aggregate amperage usage not to exceed 80 percent of the rated service for the room (as defined by wire and breaker size).
The use of the following electrical devices are prohibited in rooms:
- Heating element devices of any kind are not allowed. Examples include (but are not limited to):
- Hot plates, toaster ovens, toasters and water cup heaters.
- Electric heat strips.
- Electric blankets and heat pads.
- Extension cords other than power strips.
- Electrical devices of any description are prohibited in the dorms.
- Window air conditioners
- 5 Flammables. No open flames or burning of materials in the CHAPTER HOUSE. This includes cigarettes, candles, incense, etc.
- Paint and stain material. No paint containers, spray paint, foam coloring, etc. shall be allowed in the facility and use of materials shall incur a fine of no less than the cost of removable and additional charges.
- Illegal Drugs or Alcohol. No drugs or alcohol that are not permitted by the State of Indiana, the County of Monroe Indiana, the City of Bloomington Indiana and Indiana University will be allowed on the facility.
- The Formal Room. The “Formal Room” is a room for student studying, Alumni and member meetings and should be kept in a clean and formal state:
- No food or drink is allowed in the room without the permission of the House Director and then only on special occasions.
- All animals are prohibited entry
- The room is to be locked during parties
- Entry and exit is only by the doors and all windows are to be locked for security purposes e. Non items other than chapter property are allowed to be stored in the Formal Room f. Members and guest are not allowed to sleep over in the Formal Room
- Removable Items. Removable items furnished with the rooms (blinds, screens, shelving units, etc.) may not be removed, moved or stored anywhere in the CHAPTER HOUSE without prior written permission.
- Hardships. Tenants finding that these rules impose a hardship may request an exception by applying in writing to the House Director. The application will be promptly investigated, and a written response will be made within fourteen days. Exceptions granted will be close ended and have and expiration date (usually the end of the semester). Exceptions will not be precedent setting. An exception granted in one room will not automatically apply in other rooms.
- Check out and Removal of Tenant Property. All tenants are responsible at the end of the school year or termination of their contract to contact the ALUMNI CORP or it’s agent to schedule a check out inspection to identify damages to their assigned room. Tenants who do not perform a check out will be responsible for the damages assessed by the ALUMNI CORP. All property must be removed from the room by the tenant at the end of the spring semester in order that the ALUMNI CORP may:
- Assess damage to the room in a timely manner.
- Make timely Security Deposit refunds, but not until 90 days following matriculation. c. Clean and perform other maintenance without unnecessary hindrance.
- Have the room available for the following year rental.
- Avoid the expense of moving and disposing of STUDENT’S personal property.
The ALUMNI CORP will not arrange for the moving and summer storage of couches and other large furniture pieces. Any items left in the room at the end of the school year will be removed and disposed of at the occupant’s expense.
All/any violations may result in a fine(s) that are governed by the housing agreement. There will be no exceptions and extreme remedies could include expulsion from the house and, if approved by national, the chapter.
